The Art of Being Present: Joy in the Everyday

There’s a quiet magic in the everyday. At The Alchemy of Being, we call it the art of being present. It’s not about chasing big moments but about tuning in to the small ones – a hands-on healing session, a long hug, or a spontaneous dance in your kitchen. These simple acts are invitations to feel alive, connected, and truly here.

Let’s explore how presence, laughter, and connection can transform your daily life, and why neuroscience shows these practices really do work.

Why Presence Feels So Good: The Science

When you’re present, your brain and body respond in remarkable ways:

Physical Touch

Physical touch is a fundamental human need that supports both mental and physical wellbeing. Large-scale studies show that touch interventions, such as massage or gentle contact, benefit everything from sleep patterns and blood pressure to fatigue and pain levels. Touch activates the brain’s reward centres, boosting mood and promoting feelings of wellbeing. It lowers cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, and helps regulate the nervous system, making it easier to shift out of stress and into relaxation.

A 10-minute massage, for example, can significantly reduce stress responses and ease anxiety. For those struggling with depression, anxiety, or chronic illness, touch is especially effective, offering even greater benefits in these groups compared to healthy adults.

Importantly, the benefits of touch extend across all ages and backgrounds. Whether it’s a gentle stroke, therapeutic massage, or affectionate contact, touch improves mood, reduces pain, and supports better sleep. It even helps counteract loneliness, which often co-occurs with chronic illness and low mood. While not everyone is comfortable with touch, and personal boundaries always matter, those who embrace positive, consensual touch tend to experience greater resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Touch is a simple, accessible way to rebalance, connect, and nurture yourself and others. It’s a vital tool for your wellbeing, helping you feel grounded, cared for, and more present in your everyday life.

Hugging

Humans crave connection, and hugging is one of the simplest ways to get it. On average, people crave a hug 13 times a day, but the typical hug only lasts about 3 seconds. For real healing, you need a hug that lasts at least 20 seconds. Science says we need 12 hugs a day for growth, 8 for maintenance, and 4 for survival. So, hug long and hug often.

A proper hug calms your mind and eases your heart rate. It triggers the release of endorphins, which relieve pain, and oxytocin, which strengthens the bond between you and the person you’re hugging. Hugging protects against high stress by lowering cortisol levels and helps fight feelings of loneliness. It’s good for your heart health, relaxes your muscles, and can even boost your self-esteem. The healing power of a hug is simple, accessible, and always available.

Laughter

Laughter is a natural, accessible way to bring more joy and health into your life. On average, people laugh about 15 times a day. Yet, most of us don’t realise just how much our bodies and minds benefit from a good laugh. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers, and boosts dopamine and oxytocin, which lift mood and strengthen feelings of connection. Even one session of genuine laughter can reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, by up to 37%, helping your body recover from stress and lowering blood pressure. Laughter also increases your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and improves circulation. This extra oxygen and movement relaxes your muscles and can leave you feeling calm for up to 45 minutes afterwards.

Regular laughter supports your immune system by increasing the production of immune cells and antibodies, helping you fight off illness. It also raises your pain threshold, making discomfort easier to bear, and can halve pain levels for some people.

Laughter is especially powerful in groups, where it strengthens social bonds and fosters a sense of belonging. The more you laugh with others, the more connected and supported you feel. Science shows laughter isn’t just a reaction, it’s a tool for wellbeing. The more you laugh, the more resilient, joyful, and connected you become.

Movement

Movement is one of the most effective and accessible ways to boost your health and happiness. On average, people who move regularly experience better mood, sharper focus, and more energy throughout the day. Even light movement, like walking or stretching, can make a big difference. Movement triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine, which lift your mood and help you feel more alive. It also reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels and calming the nervous system.

Regular movement supports heart health, lowers blood pressure, and helps regulate blood sugar, reducing your risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even some cancers. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week can cut your risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 31% and improve your overall longevity.

Movement is also a powerful tool for your mind. It helps reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improves sleep, and sharpens your memory and thinking skills. When you move, your body and brain work together to release tension, clear mental fog, and bring you into the present moment. The benefits are dose-dependent: the more you move, the greater the rewards, but even small bursts of activity throughout the day can have a big impact on your wellbeing.

Movement isn’t just about exercise routines-it’s about finding ways to enjoy your body, whether that’s dancing in your kitchen, taking a walk in nature, or simply stretching when you wake up. Every bit counts, and every move is a step towards greater presence, joy, and connection.

Simple Ways to Invite Presence, Laughter, and Connection

Here’s ideas for your Toolbelt for Life – practical ways to curate more joy and connection every day:

  • Start with the Senses: Pause and notice what you can see, hear, feel, and smell right now. This grounds you in the present and quiets the mind.
  • Share a Long Hug: Give someone you trust a long hug – one that lasts at least 20 seconds to get the optimal benefit. Breathe together. Feel the shift as your bodies relax and your mind settles.
  • Spontaneous Dance: Put on your favourite song and move however you like. Let go of how it looks. Focus on how it feels.
  • Hands-On Healing: Whether it’s a self-massage, a session with one of our Alchemists, or simply placing your hand on your heart, physical touch is a powerful way to connect to yourself and the moment.
  • Laugh Often: Invite moments of laughter into your ay – be that telling a joke, recalling a funny memory, jumping online to watch a funny video, or going to a stand-up gig. Laughter is medicine for the brain and heart.
  • Mindful Micro-Moments: Notice the warmth of your tea, the softness of your jumper, or the sound of birds outside. These tiny moments, when savoured, add up to a life rich with presence and joy.

Why This Matters

Life isn’t always easy. We all face moments when we feel overwhelmed, lonely, sad, despondent, angry, or frustrated. These emotions are part of being human, but they can knock us off balance if we don’t have ways to support ourselves.

That’s why having a Toolbelt for Life matters so much. When you have simple, practical tools at hand, you can use them to steady yourself in tough moments. Whether it’s a long hug, a deep breath, a bit of movement, or a laugh, these practices help bring you out of the grip of strong emotions. They give you space to pause, reset, and choose how you want to respond, rather than just reacting out of habit or stress.

It’s not about getting it perfect. Perfection doesn’t exist and isn’t the goal. Life is always changing, and so are we. What matters is being able to curate your experience, moment by moment. Some days you’ll feel calm and centred, other days you’ll feel anything but. That’s ok. The real power lies in noticing where you are, reaching for a tool that helps, and knowing you can shift your state.

At The Alchemy of Being, we believe wellbeing is a journey, not a destination. You don’t need to find yourself-you already have what you need. It’s about curating the right habits, beliefs, and tools to support you as you move through life’s ups and downs. This is how you build resilience, self-awareness, and a deeper sense of joy and connection, no matter what life throws your way.

Your Invitation

We invite you to explore these simple practices and see how they resonate with you. Try adding one or two into your day and notice how your body, mind, and mood respond. Remember, this isn’t about perfection or doing everything at once-it’s about curating your experience moment by moment.

Presence, joy, and connection are always within reach. With each hug, each laugh, each mindful breath, you’re choosing how to show up in your life. You’re not just living-you’re actively shaping a life that feels vibrant, grounded, and deeply connected.
