'TOOLBELT FOR LIFE' EDITION
|
| | |
|
Hi there,
Welcome to November’s issue of Toolbelt for Life. After exploring 'Rooted in Joy' last month, it felt natural to follow that grounded energy with something softer - the exhale that comes after a long, full breath.
As we move deeper into autumn, the natural world around us begins to slow down. But It’s not about stopping; it’s about releasing, going inward and regathering resources for when spring comes. Letting the year settle. Making space for what’s next.
So this month’s theme is 'The Power of the Exhale'. To honour that, I've tweaked the flow slightly - so it reflects the natural breath, and to help you feel the exhale, not just read about it.
Think of it as your permission slip to breathe out, and enjoy the space that makes - who knows what will fill it?
So before we dive in, take one deep breath with me.
Inhale possibility.
Exhale everything else.
Shall we begin? |

|
In Practice Prompt, we offer a bite-sized ritual or reflective question to bring the theme of the month into your daily rhythm. These simple yet powerful nudges are designed to help you pause, recalibrate, and listen to the quiet wisdom within. Because real change starts with one intentional breath. |

The Evening Exhale
We’ve just taken that first deep breath together - now let’s turn it into a gentle rhythm for the days ahead.
Each evening over the next week or so, pause for a moment and take three slow, steady breaths.
With every exhale, quietly ask yourself:
What can I release from today?
It might be a thought, a worry, a to-do, or simply the tension sitting in your shoulders.
No need to fix or analyse - just let it leave with the breath.
This small practice is your daily exhale. A simple way to help the body unwind and make space for quiet joy to return. Because real change rarely begins with doing more; it starts with one intentional breath. |

The Year I Finally Exhaled |
|
When I first started working with a functional medicine practitioner, we ran every test imaginable - adrenals, thyroid, cortisol, parasites, bloods, faeces the lot. When the results came back, he asked me to see one of his colleagues in-person in London.
I’ll never forget walking into that gym. He looked at me completely puzzled. Based on my results, he said he couldn’t quite believe I was even upright. My adrenals were exhausted, my thyroid barely functioning, and yet there I was - buzzing with energy, holding it all together, still pushing through.
He asked what exercise I was doing, and I reeled off the list: Pilates, TRX, a trainer in the park. He shook his head and said gently, “You need to stop.” Then he added, “The only exercise I want you to do for the next three months is to breathe - deep, slow, full breaths.”
That moment changed a lot. Until then, I’d treated stillness as optional, something I’d earn once everything else was done. But my body had other plans. Learning to exhale - properly, completely - became the first step in healing my nervous system and restoring balance.
It’s strange how something so simple can feel so radical. To stop. To breathe. To rest. But sometimes the most powerful medicine isn’t in doing more - it’s in finally allowing yourself to exhale.
I’ll be exploring more of what that experience taught me in my upcoming Brainz article, The Pace Principle - a reflection on what happens when we stop racing against ourselves and start living at the speed we’re built for.

4-7-8 Breath: Practice The Power of the Exhale |
|
This month, we’re focusing on the simplest yet most profound act of release - the exhale. Breathwork reminds us that letting go doesn’t mean giving up; it means making space for renewal. Just as nature exhales before winter, we too can find peace in the pause.
One of the most popular techniques for this is the 4-7-8 Breath - and there’s a good reason for its reputation. Simple but powerful, it trains the body to slow down by extending the exhale: breathing in for 4 counts, holding for 7, and releasing for 8. That longer out-breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system, calming the body’s stress response and inviting a sense of deep rest.
Practised regularly, it can lower heart rate, ease anxiety, and quiet a busy mind - especially before bed or whenever you feel overstimulated. It’s a reminder that peace isn’t found in doing more, but in learning to breathe out fully.
You can explore the full practice and step-by-step guidance in our Wellness Wiki entry |

Andy Puddicombe’s TED Talk: “All it takes is 10 mindful minutes” |
|
If you’ve ever told yourself you don’t have time to pause, this one’s for you. In his TED Talk, former monk and Headspace co-founder Andy Puddicombe offers a refreshingly simple take on mindfulness - no incense, no silence retreat, just ten minutes and a bit of curiosity.
He explains that giving the mind even a few minutes of stillness each day can change how we experience everything else. Those ten mindful minutes act like a mental exhale - releasing the constant stream of thoughts and helping us reset.
It’s a short, lighthearted reminder that presence doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes all it takes to feel calm, clear, and connected again is to stop… and notice the space between thoughts.

Adult Colouring Books: The Art of the Exhale |
|
Sometimes stillness isn’t sitting in silence - it’s the soft rhythm of colour filling a page. Adult colouring books offer a moving meditation that quiets the mind without demanding focus. The repetitive motion helps clear mental clutter, ease tension, and bring attention gently back to the present moment.
It’s creativity as release - a way to exhale through movement, colour, and texture. Perfect for evenings when you want to unwind but still keep your hands busy and your mind light.
We’ve gathered some of our favourite colouring books and meditative aids on our Our Picks – Meditative Aids - Amplifying Meditation if you’d like to explore.

Lessons from Hibernation |
|
As temperatures drop, much of the natural world begins to slow. Bears retreat to their dens, hedgehogs curl into leaf piles, and bats tuck themselves into caves. All surrendering to the deep pause of winter. Hibernation isn’t laziness; it’s biology at its most brilliant. Heart rates drop, breathing slows, and the body conserves just enough energy to see it through until spring.
It’s nature’s reminder that rest isn’t a luxury - it’s strategy. These animals don’t waste energy fighting the season; they yield to it, trusting that stillness is part of survival. And when spring comes, they re-emerge stronger, ready for renewal.
What if we approached our own winters, the quiet, reflective phases of life, in the same way?
Instead of pushing through, we could rest through.
Allow our minds to settle, our bodies to replenish, and our energy to rebuild beneath the surface.
After all, growth doesn’t always happen in the light. Sometimes, it begins in the dark, where the quiet work of renewal takes place unseen. And when the time is right, we too can rise - rested, ready, and a little more ourselves than before. |

The Quiet Between Breaths
As we move through November, may you give yourself permission to slow down - to find comfort in the quiet between breaths. The exhale isn’t an ending; it’s the clearing that makes space for what comes next.
If October was about rooting into joy, November is about releasing enough to let that joy breathe again. Rest, breathe, reflect - not because you have to, but because you can.
Thank you for taking this slower journey with me. I hope this issue has reminded you that sometimes the most powerful progress happens when you pause.
Here’s to a calmer close to the year - one full, steady exhale at a time.
Until next time, breathe easy.
